According to an article in Marathon and Beyond:

Start your first 6 miles as such:
MP + 30sec
MP + 30sec
MP + 20sec
MP + 20sec
MP + 10sec
MP + 10sec

Then you only have 20 (.2) to actually run at MP

How do you determine MP?
Take your target time. For Chicago, let’s pick 3:35. Convert that to minutes. 3hrs x 60 = 180 + 35 = 215. Subtract the extra two minutes you’ll be taking over the first 6 miles. That comes to 213. Divide that by 26.2, which comes to 8:129. Multiply the seconds by 60 to get 7.74. MP is therefore 8.0774

1: 8:37
2: 8:37
3: 8:27
4: 8:27
5: 8:17
6: 8:17
7-26: 8:07
.2: 1:37

Finish time: 3:34:39
